Designing & Implementing a PMS

People are hired into organizations to deliver performance. Every organization must therefore have an objective, credible system for measuring managerial and employee performance. Traditional performance appraisal has failed as a performance management and measurement tool.

This explains why modern organizations are shifting from the narrow focus on performance appraisal to a focus on total performance management. When well designed and effectively implemented, a performance management system (PMS) provides one of the most powerful management tools for utilizing employee potential.

A performance management system brings the supervisor and team member into constructive dialogue about performance throughout the year, and provides the platform for adult-adult communication on performance expectations and measurement.

An effective performance management system not only provides a tool for the objective measurement of employee performance, it also provides objective performance data for administrative and strategic human resource decisions.
